With Cristiano Ronaldo adding to his haul of awards at the 2017 Ballon d’or and rightly so…we are blessed as a generation of football fans to have been able to watch Ronaldo and Messi battle it out for the accolade of worlds best footballer. Up and down the country and in changing rooms around the world, there is an argument for both to be called the worlds greatest!! Whatever’s your persuasion, its a pleasure to be able to watch them both play over the last few and coming years.
Whats really exciting us now is there’s a number of players looking to wrestle this mantle from them in these coming years..
Here at Football DNA we take a look at some of those contenders to the throne..
Neymar: Arguably at any other time in football Neymar would’ve already taken some of these awards. Skilful, quick, great vision, as good a player as there is…apart from the top two!!
Kevin De Bruyne: Unbelievable Vision, a range of passing that is unrivalled at this moment in time. The more goals he scores like the ones of late, the more he will trouble the worlds best.
Kylian Mbappe: For us at DNA, the most exciting prospect we’ve seen in years. Although very young and only time will tell, but he has all the tools.. Pace to burn, athleticism, balance, technique and skill, great awareness with an eye for goal. If he can be nurtured correctly he could rule the world for years to come.
Mo Salah: On flames at this moment, looks like scoring every game. Exciting player to watch, just needs to keep this recent form going.
Harry Kane: The great English hope, his form over the last few years has been nothing short of sensational.Rightly getting the accolades hedeserves now, if he continues in this form he could definitely find his way to the top of the pile.
Gareth Bale: Lost his way of late, struggling with injury’s. If he can regain his form which helped Wales to the semis of the euros and Real to the Champions league title, he would be one to possibly dislodge the top two.
Eden Hazard: After a series of ‘will he wont he go’ to Real, he looks to be back to his best and when the Belgium international is on song, he is definitely up there with the worlds best.
Phillipe Coutinho: Another who looks to be finding his best form again after a summer of turbulence. The Brazilian oozes class with his samba style, making Liverpool tick with his slick passing and movement. When he’s on form we’ve not seen him give the ball away, either when he’s passing or easing away from the opposition with some silky skills.
Toni Kroos: This boy oozes quality, every pass finds a teammate, every touch is bang on point. Quality player, if he can bring even more attacking flair to his game he has the tools to be right up there with the best.
Alexis Sanchez: An as exciting player as there is on his day. Pace and skill in abundance with clever movement, always looking to attack. needs to have more of his ‘days’ to trouble the best again.
Best of the rest: It’s harsh on more defensive players but the attacking players are the ones who usually get the accolades. Bringing up the best of the rest for us are..
David De Gea: In unbelievable form, making save after save for Man United. For us if he could be even more commanding not only will he just be the best goalkeeper in the world he could also be considered the best player.
Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford, Kyle Walker, John Stones could bring up the English challenge if they can kick their game on in the World Cup this summer.
Dries Martin, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Toby Alderweireld, Eric Bailey, Cesar Azpilicueta and N’golo Kante are all players that need to be watched closely in the next few seasons, whilst were also looking forward to seeing how Alvaro Morata develops at Chelsea in the next few months.
The world is blessed with fantastic footballers which are a pleasure to watch. We cant wait to see how this battle to be the Worlds greatest player in the coming years develops. For now lets celebrate possibly two of the greatest players of all time in Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
